Romantic ruins of a fairy-tale-like castle are situated on so called Eagles’ Nests Trail. Between Czestochowa and Krakow there are several castles and ruins, but Ogrodzieniec belongs to the most picturesque – not only on the trail, but in whole Poland.
It was build in 14th century and rebuild in 16th. Italian architect turned Gothic castle into a Renaissance residence, at the time almost as splendid as Wawel in Krakow, the king’s castle.
Since the last of the owners family abandoned it in beginning of the19th century, the castle was left and become a picturesque ruin.
RuinsThe ruins are opened for sightseeing from April to October, from 9am till dusk, but in winter season you can still take stroll around it and take great photos.
Other places on the Eagles’ Nests Trail:
Ojcow National Park with outcrops of limestone,
Pieskowa Skala – a castle with breathtaking scenery (Dog Rock),
Bobolice – splendid ruins of 14th century castle, where tournaments and outdoor games take place
Mirow – another ruins of a medieval castle
Olsztyn – every autumn fireworks display and laser show illuminate the ruins.
To all these places you can get either by car or by bus from Krakow or Czestochowa. Olkusz and Olsztyn are places to stay if you want to spend a night on the trail.
